Deine Sonia: A Reading from a Burned Letter by Reinhard Bölling, Translated by D. E. Rowe
2018
It was in January 1990. Finally, just two months after the Berlin Wall had fallen, I had the opportunity to spend a few days at the Mittag-Leffler Institute in Djursholm, a small town just northeast of Stockholm. The palatial villa that today houses the Institute is the former home of Gosta Mittag-Leffler (1846–1927), and on entering its doorway I felt as if I had taken a step back into the world in which he lived. For me, the Institute’s single greatest attraction lay in its archival holdings, and particularly the extensive correspondence that linked Mittag-Leffler with many of the era’s leading mathematicians. A former student of Karl Weierstrass (1815–1897), Mittag-Leffler sought to pres…
A che punto è la notte: i numeri delle donne nella matematica italiana.
2018
(EN) Gender equality in scientific research is a problematic issue and has been much debated in the last years. As a consequence, some countries have implemented policies to address the problem. In this paper we collected and analysed the last data regarding the academic careers on women mathematician in Italy, as a step for further discussion on possible positive actions.
From pioneering to implementing automated blood pressure measurement in clinical practice: Thomas Pickeringʼs legacy
2010
Thomas G. Pickering spent most of his scientific career in carrying out research on clinical hypertension and blood pressure (BP) measurement. In our review of Pickering's seminal work, we first focused on white-coat hypertension and masked hypertension, two terms that he had introduced. Next, we highlighted the early publications of Pickering on diurnal BP variability and on the clinical application of self-measured BP. Pickering's work inspired many investigators worldwide and constituted a solid basis for further research. Pickering's original ideas led to algorithms for risk stratification involving white-coat hypertension and masked hypertension, diurnal BP variability, and self-measur…
Mathematical literacy in Plant Physiology undergraduates: results of interventions aimed at improving students' performance
2013
The importance of mathematical literacy in any scientific career is widely recognized. However, various studies report lack of numeracy and mathematical literacy in students from various countries. In the present work we present a detailed study of the mathematical literacy of Spanish undergraduate students of Biology enrolled in a Plant Physiology course. We have performed individual analyses of results obtained during the period 2000-2011, for questions in the examinations requiring and not requiring mathematical skills. Additionally, we present the outcome of two interventions introduced with the aim of helping students improve their prospects for success in the course. Our results confi…
Women Scientists Who Made Nuclear Astrophysics
2019
Female role models reduce the impact on women of stereotype threat, i.e. of being at risk of conforming to a negative stereotype about one’s social, gender, or racial group (Fine in Delusion of Gender. W.W. Norton & Co. NY, p. 36, 2010 [1]; Steele and Aronson in J Pers Soc Psychol 69:797–811, 1995 [2]). This can lead women scientists to underperform or to leave their scientific career because of negative stereotypes such as, not being as talented or as interested in science as men. Sadly, history rarely provides role models for women scientists; instead, it often renders these women invisible (CafeBabel Homepage [3]). In response to this situation, we present a selection of twelve outst…
